Understanding Your Silver

What Do the Hallmarks Mean?

Silver is stamped with a number showing its purity. All of these are silver, and all have value — we XRF test every item to confirm the exact content rather than relying on the mark alone.

800
80% pure

Common in older European silverware and continental pieces

900
90% pure

Often found in older bullion pieces and some antique items

925
92.5% pure

Sterling silver — the most common mark on jewellery and silverware

999
99.9% pure

Fine silver, typically investment-grade pieces and bars

An honest warning about plated silver. Many older tea sets, trays and cutlery sets are silver plated — a thin silver coating over a base metal — rather than solid silver. Plated items hold no meaningful silver value. Marks like EPNS, A1 or "Silver on Copper" indicate plating. We test everything and tell you straight either way, at no cost and with no obligation.

Why Sell Silver With Us

Silver Deserves the Same Rigour as Gold

Silver is worth less per gram than gold, which is precisely why some buyers treat it casually. We don't — the same testing equipment, the same transparent calculation, the same immediate payment.

XRF-Tested Accuracy

Professional XRF testing confirms the exact silver content of every item — no scratching, no acid, no damage, and no guessing from the hallmark alone.

Where to Sell Silver Jewellery in South Africa

If you've been searching for "sell my silver jewellery," "where can I sell silver near me" or "silver buyers," we buy silver in every form — and have done since 1997. Most people know us for gold, but the process is identical for silver: professional XRF testing, pricing against the live international silver market, and immediate EFT payment once you accept.

What Is My Silver Worth?

Two things determine the value of your silver: its purity and its weight. Purity is usually stamped on the piece — 925 for sterling, or 800, 900 and 999 for other grades. We apply the live international silver spot price, converted to Rand, to the actual silver content confirmed by testing.

Silver is worth considerably less per gram than gold, and it's worth being upfront about that. But quantity changes the picture entirely. Silver jewellery is light, so a few rings won't amount to much. A full cutlery canteen or a Victorian tea service, on the other hand, can weigh several kilograms — and those pieces are frequently worth far more than their owners expect.

Solid Silver vs Silver Plated

This is the single most important thing to understand before selling. Silver plated items have no meaningful silver value. Plating is a microscopically thin layer of silver over a base metal such as copper or nickel, and the recoverable silver content is negligible.

Look for these marks, which indicate plating rather than solid silver:

  • EPNS — Electro-Plated Nickel Silver
  • EP or EPBM — Electro-Plated Britannia Metal
  • A1, A2 — plating quality grades, not purity marks
  • "Silver on Copper" or "Sheffield Plate"

Solid silver carries a numeric purity mark instead — 925, 800, 900 or 999 — often alongside a maker's mark. If you're unsure, don't worry about it. We test everything and tell you honestly, free of charge and with no obligation to sell.

What We Buy

  • Silver rings, chains, bracelets, bangles, earrings and pendants
  • Sterling silver tea sets, coffee services and trays
  • Cutlery canteens and individual serving pieces
  • Candlesticks, photo frames, vanity sets and christening gifts
  • Silver Krugerrands and fine silver bullion pieces
  • Scrap, broken and tarnished silver in any condition

Please don't polish it first

Tarnish is a surface reaction and has no effect on silver content or value. Polishing removes a small amount of the metal itself, so cleaning your pieces before selling can very slightly reduce what they're worth. Send them exactly as they are.

Selling Silver — Answered

Yes. We buy sterling silver jewellery, silverware such as tea sets, cutlery and trays, silver Krugerrands, and scrap or broken silver. Silver is tested and priced exactly the same way as gold, against the live international silver market price.
Silver is priced on purity and weight, applied to the live international silver spot price converted to Rand. Sterling silver is 92.5% pure and usually marked 925. We XRF test every item to confirm its exact silver content before making an offer, and we explain the calculation to you.
925 is the hallmark for sterling silver — 92.5% pure silver alloyed with other metals for strength. You may also see 800, 900 or 999 marks. All of these are silver and all are valuable. We test to confirm the exact content rather than relying on the mark alone.
Yes. Inherited tea sets, trays, cutlery canteens, candlesticks and serving pieces are all bought by weight and purity. Please note that many older pieces are silver plated rather than solid silver, and plated items hold no meaningful silver value. We test and tell you honestly either way.
Yes. We buy silver Krugerrands at live market rates with immediate EFT payment, exactly as we do with their gold counterparts.
Per gram, yes — silver trades at a far lower price than gold. But quantity matters. Silverware and cutlery canteens are heavy, and a single tea set or canteen can hold a substantial amount of silver. There's no minimum, so it's always worth having it tested.
Yes. Condition doesn't affect the silver content, so we buy broken chains, single earrings, dented pieces, bent cutlery and tarnished items. Don't polish or clean anything before sending — it makes no difference to the value.
Three ways: send your items by fully insured courier from anywhere in South Africa, book an appointment at our Pretoria office, or request a home visit (Ts&Cs apply). Every route uses the same XRF testing, the same live pricing and immediate EFT payment.
Payment is immediate via EFT. Once you accept the offer, payment goes straight to your bank account the same day your items are tested.
No minimum. We buy single items, small pieces, or entire collections and canteens. Every gram has value.
